We believe in change

The Donald A. Burns Foundation was founded in 1998 by telecommunications professional and philanthropist Donald Burns. Based in Palm Beach, Florida, the foundation is dedicated to supporting a range of community-oriented organizations and causes.

Through partnerships with organizations including the Victory Institute and Lambda Legal, the foundation has funded LGBTQ+ support programs including campaign and candidate training to build the next generation of diverse LGBTQ+ leaders in the U.S. The foundation has also helped serve community health needs through the Nantucket Cottage Hospital and Palliative & Supportive Care of Nantucket.

Supporting educational opportunities for students, the Donald A. Burns Foundation has helped Nantucket High School expand Advanced Placement math and science course offerings and professional development opportunities for teachers. The organization also supports scholarship programs for students distributed by the Palm Beach Police Foundation.

Through its support of Sustainable Nantucket, the foundation has funded an Adopt-an-Apprentice program, covering the costs of hiring, training and overseeing farm apprentices that help the organization promote a locally-based and self-reliant food system.

Other organizations the foundation has supported include the Humane Society, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County and the Town of Palm Beach United Way.

Our mission

Donald A. Burns Foundation, Inc.

The Donald A. Burns Foundation, Inc. (“The Foundation”) has been formed to make charitable gifts to those organizations that nurture the lifetime social objectives of its founder. The Foundation will adhere to all rules and regulations that govern the operation of a private or family foundation as they may be modified from time to time.

Best Start Opportunity Giving

The first objective of the Foundation will be to broaden the educational choices available to elementary level school children and their parents. The Foundation will form no bias toward public or private schools in the pursuit of providing the best educational option for a particular child. Economically deprived communities and families will be the preferred beneficiaries of The Foundation’s giving.

Family Choice Opportunity Giving

The second objective of the Foundation will be to broaden the family planning options available to pregnant women [and their families] who are unable or unwilling to raise a child. Funding will be provided to those organizations that provide educational, nutritional, medical, childcare, and adoption support services to those mothers [and their families] that choose to give birth to their babies. The Foundation will fund organizations that support the birth of a child without promoting one pregnancy outcome over any other. The Foundation will be vigilant in its giving to remember that the support needs of a newborn child are ongoing.

Donald A. Burns Lifetime Giving

The third objective of The Foundation is to facilitate discretionary gifts that cover the spectrum of charitable opportunities including, but not limited to, the Arts and Humanities, Medical Services Delivery, and Palm Beach-Based Community Organizations.
